I think this is less of a desenstization and more of a visceral way of bringing awareness to child war refugees. VH1 showed the commercial (which was in German, but much of the context was understandable), and I found it was meant to bring out those feelings of horror in a way that people would find a connection with it. Now, if Gargamel had come in and made some kind of joke, then it would have been gratuitous. There is no laughter and "happily ever after" at the end of this PSA.
